Yep, just as you have to decide between Linux and Windows on a PC, you will need to make up your mind about whether you would rather go for a Symbian, Windows Mobile, Palm OS, BlackBerry or Linux device and each OS also has its own sub-groups too (Symbian, for instance, has different editions of Series 60 and UIQ). The jury are still out on which one is the best, but you will need to keep in mind factors like speed of operation, number of applications available (preferably free ones) and compatibility with other devices, before you opt for a particular OS. Do remember that unlike in PCs, you cannot install any OS on any phone—so if you are dreaming of running a Symbian OS on an iPhone, forget it! Here you are pretty much stuck with the OS that comes on the device. No changes allowed.
While screen size is indeed important on all cellphones, it attains an entirely different dimension in the case of enterprise phones. This is because one often ends up viewing, documents, presentations and spreadsheets on enterprise devices and even browsing the Internet a fair bit. And the bigger the screen, the lesser the strain on your eyes and fingers.
Do you like touchscreens, physical keypads or a blend of the two? And even in physical keypads, do you want a proper QWERTY keypad, a semi-QWERTY keypad or just the good old alphanumeric affair? it all really depends on your needs. Toushcreen users normally end up with larger screens and the convenience of being able to scribble using a stylus, but have often to put up with iffy handwriting recognition systems and slightly lower battery performance. On the other hand, those with physical keypads often find the keys way too small to really replicate the convenience of a notebook but get better battery performance and more software applications to play around with. Suit yourself! |
Different devices come with different software options. For instance, some might come with a full-fledged office suite while others might just have an application that allows you to view (but not edit or create) MS Office files. You will also need to consider whether your device comes with a PDF reader, a good email client (preferably supporting push mail) and a decent Internet browser. It’s just like a PC—the hardware is every bit as important as the software.
As most enterprise phone users are frequent travellers, do check if the phone will work on all networks. If you have no intention of straying beyond Indian borders, do make sure that it supports EDGE (you will be surprised to know that some high-end enterprise phones do not support it). And it is not just a matter of networks, you will also need to check out if other connectivity options such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are available onboard and also the kind of devices supported. It always helps if you can connect a projector or printer directly to your phone!
You need to make sure that the camera on your phone supports features like business card reading and whether the phone’s speakers are good enough to allow you to use it in speakerphone mode even in a meeting, if need be. Also check if the phone allows you to record long audio clips and whether it allows image editing—you will be surprised at just how often you need them.
A good processor is necessary to ensure that your device keeps ticking over nicely. Storage of course will allow you to carry most of your files in your hand, and having lots of memory to play around will ensure that you can run multiple applications without your device hanging or crashing. |

The Korean mobile phone maker Samsung has yet another new mobile phone, this time it is the Samsung Double Folder SPH-W6450 mobile handset,it is also know as Samsung OZ which as the name suggests incorporates a double joint mechanism which means if can fold two ways.To make a user’s texting, calling and portable entertainment a soothing experience, Samsung has announced OZ Double Folder (SPH-W6450) dual flip phone. Want to call or text – use it like a normal clamshell phone; want to view live TV, images/videos or surf th/0internet – flip it horizontally. The horizontal flip shows up Internet, music player or DMB icon for quicker access.
They call it the OZ Double Folder Phone, and it has been designed to improve the way you watch TV via DMB or compressed videos on your phone. You can do all that with any other smartphone you will say. But does your smartphone rotate two ways? Or should I better say fold two ways? I don’t think so! That double joint rotation mechanism turns your phone in either a clamshell phone or a mini-netbook. You choose!
It adds to the series of recently presented devices the company plans to release to the market during this year, among which we could see the Samsung OMNIA HD, or the SPH-W7100, which comes with an alarm siren.
It seems that Samsung has worked a lot on delivering an enhanced portable entertainment experience to its users, along with all the calling and messaging facilities the device sports. When flipped horizontally, the new double-jointed Samsung OZ Double Folder will shows up Internet, music player or DMB icons to allow for a fast access to these functionalities.
Samsungs SPH-W6450 might not be available outside of Korea, but this dual folding phone is rather interesting, as it was designed for portable Internet viewing. It can open up like your run-of-the-mill clamshell phone, but it can also unfold

Samsung has launched a stylish mid-range mobile, the latest addition to its line of candy bar feature candybar Lucido with a 5-megapixel camera and GPS . Lucido translates from Italian to ‘sleek’, which tells you a lot about what you need to know about the handset’s design intentions.According to Samsung, the Lucido offers "uncompromising design – with distinctive contours, clean lines and vibrant colour" and is set to redefine the traditional bar handset
The candybar design features a 5MP camera with LED flash that comes with face detection, smile shot and anti-blur technology, so while it's not in the 8MP camera league of the Tocco Ultra, it's still going to take more than decent snaps if it builds on Samsung's burgeoning camera reputation. The microSDHC slot can deal with up to 8GB capacity cards, offering storage for a few thousand full quality photos from the onboard camera.
When it comes to the specifications list and capabilities of the fresh Samsung Lucido S7220, we can count there quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900), 900/1200 UMTS, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA connectivity, as well as Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR, and USB 2.0 capabilities.

It is dual GSM/3G with 7.2Mbps HSDPA support, and on the rear of the phone is a 5-megapixel autofocus camera with face detection, smile shot and anti-blur technology.
There's also tight integration with Google Maps and the in-built aGPS chip, with geotagging support an obvious extra, although we're still waiting for the site / application that actually makes this function worthwhile. If you're standing in front of the Sphinx in the picture... we know where you were when it was taken. Those that are fond of traveling will be able to enjoy the phone's A-GPS navigation capabilities via Google Maps. In addition, Lucido S7220 also comes with a built-in accelerometer, as well as with a microSD memory card slot that should provide users with additional storage space. The new mobile phone measures 114 x 46.3 x 11.8 mm.
It has strong multimedia support thanks to H.264, H.263, WMV and MPEG4 compatibility. Video can also be recorded using the camera, at QVGA resolution, 15fps. The Versa is a terrific texting phone, but the software's rough edges prevent it from being an all-around winner.
Verizon Wireless and LG Electronics announced today that the LG VX9600 Versa will launch next week on the Verizon network. The Versa's 2MP camera promises a lot, with face detection and a feature called SmartPic, which claims to reduce noise and improve low-light performance. Picture quality was sharp if sometimes overexposed in the bright areas. Low-light photos didn't look too bad, and didn't show too much blur, while daylight photos showed a bit of visible compression artifacting. As far as we could tell, SmartPic didn't help much. The camera's autofocus is terribly slow, causing a 2.1-second shutter delay, which drops to a more reasonable 0.6-second delay if you turn autofocus off. The 640-by-480 movie-recording mode produces footage that, at 14 frames per second (fps), looked a bit jerky and compressed in testing; the 320-by-240 movie mode, at 20 fps, looked better.
The Versa's 3-inch touchscreen with tactile feedback features an animated OS with a 3D interface and customizable home screens. The phone's accelerometer rotates the screen between portrait and landscape modes, and can be used to control games. The Versa's Web browser supports Flash, RSS, and tabbed browsing. Users can snap pictures and video with the Versa's 2 megapixel camera, which can save the multimedia to the phone's microSD card slot.
The Verizon LG Versa will be available March 1 for $199.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and a two-year service agreement.
