Apart from announcing that Android has crossed over a billion activations, Sundar Pichai the Android & Chrome head also confirmed the name of next iteration of Android that will be denoted as Android 4.4 and will be called Android KitKat. Android 4.4 KitKat is first to be named after a commercial product- Nestle’s popular KitKat candy bar (licensed & trademarked by Hershey in the United States).
Google has also confirmed to BBC that neither themselves or Nestle are paying anything amongst each other to bring Android KitKat to life. In the past, Google has named its Android versions after traditional desserts but this time in the words of John Lagerling, director of Android global partnerships; it was to do something “fun and unexpected”.
Nestle on the other hand plans to sell more than 50 million chocolate bars featuring the Android Mascot.
